Abstract
Various studies have been conducted on the barriers to marriage and strategies to overcome them. However, the declining marriage rate in Iranian society can be seen as a sign of shortcomings in identifying these barriers and implementing effective solutions. Examining this phenomenon from the perspective of cultural activists can help achieve a more precise understanding and explanation of the issue. The present study, using a qualitative approach, aimed to examine the perspectives of cultural activists on marriage in Mashhad.
In this research, a convenience sampling method was employed, and 18 cultural activists in the field of marriage were selected, evenly divided by gender (9 women and 9 men). Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. The information obtained was coded and analyzed using MAQDA software. In total, 144 initial themes were identified, categorized into two main groups: problems and solutions. These themes were organized into 11 basic themes. Ultimately, after review and analysis, the basic themes were consolidated under five overarching themes: individual and family factors; Islamic lifestyle; economic-political factors; participation in marriage-related initiatives; and persuasion.
The results indicated that addressing the marriage crisis in the country requires a comprehensive and coordinated program involving families, grassroots organizations, NGOs, intermediaries, and governmental institutions, each playing their respective roles. Cultural activists highlighted the influence of media on youth in various aspects such as spouse selection, choosing an ideal lifestyle, and expectations from relationships. Furthermore, both young people and their families consider economic issues as a prerequisite for marriage, which creates a significant barrier to marriage in an unstable economic environment.
